End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an increasing public health care burden. Each year the incidence and prevalence exceed the preceding year's values, having increased from 87 177 and 365 334, respectively, in 1998 to 112 476 and 586 480, respectively, in 2008. The majority of patients with ESRD are treated with chronic dialysis therapy.
