The report notes that 53% of jurisdictions (all 50 states and the District of Columbia) reported at least substantial chronic disease epidemiology capacity in 2009 and more quality-level work is being conducted than in previous years. However, nearly half of the jurisdictions lack substantial capacity, and the percentage of jurisdictions with little or no chronic disease epidemiology capacity increased progressively during 2001-2009. A major recommendation is that improving capacity in jurisdictions with little or no chronic disease epidemiology capacity should be a priority.
