WEAVER, M.D.CHICAGO.The various instruments hitherto brought out for the application of massage to the treatment of chronic catarrhal deafness are all intended for use through the external meatus. In an endeavor to apply massage to the Eustachian tube and tympanum, I found my thumb action on the cut-off much too slow, producing at most not over four interruptions per second. In order to produce more rapid action I have had constructed an instrument which may be called an "intratympanic masseur." This instrument produces a rapid vibratory massage of the tissues of the middle ear, which is probably transmitted in part to the labyrinth. The wonderfully curative effect of vibratory massage is recognized as having a scientific basis in physiology and pathology.
