He detected a definite structure in them, believed them to be protozoan in character, and associated them with the etiology of the disease. Since that time many workers, especially Italians, have corroborated his findings and extended the work along various lines. Much of it has been done with a view of utilizing the presence of these bodies as a rapid and reliable means of diagnosis and it appears that in this respect marked success has been attained. Negri first reported the occurrence of these bodies in animals, finding them in nearly every case of suspected rabies, which gave a positive result by the inoculation method.
