N2  - Modern classifications of the diarrheal diseases of infancy reject the term "summer diarrhea" as having no scientific foundation, since investigation has shown that the diarrheas occurring in the summer months present no etiologic, anatomic or clinical peculiarities distinguishing them from those occurring at other times of year. The only foundation for this term is the great frequency of these diseases during the hot months, the explanation of this frequency being the effect of hot weather both in lowering the infantile digestive powers and in increasing the opportunities for the contamination of food supplies. The term "summer diarrhea" is used here, therefore, only as a convenient name under which to group diarrheal diseases on which a series of investigations were made during the hot months.The classification of the diarrheal diseases has been much discussed without final or definite agreement as to either its basis or its terminology
