N., aged 21, on June 24, 1909, stepped on a rusty nail which penetrated the sole of the left foot one inch. The foot and ankle began to swell immediately. The next day he was admitted to Rolater Hospital and treated in the service of Dr. J. B. Rolater. On admission his temperature was 102 F., later it rose to 103 F.Treatment.  Hot moist dressings of eresol solution were applied and changed frequently and antitetanic serum administered.
