It is also the most exact of the hematologic findings. It is as important in all abnormal conditions of the blood (the infectious and chronic diseases, as well as the so-called blood diseases) as a stained tissue in the diagnosis of a pathologic growth. It gives the eye a true picture of the conditions present which the mechanical blood findings fail to convey. It is to be regretted that with many it simply stands for the differential leucocyte count and occasionally a search for parasites or enucleated red cells. On the other hand, it is, indeed, the most comprehensive of all blood findings, for it includes in itself the mechanical as well as the pathologic findings, while it requires the least time, the least technic, is the least SN - 0002-9955 M3 - doi: 10.1001/jama.1909.25420400026002 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/jama.1909.25420400026002 ER -
