I highly recommend the book—for students considering a rural practice; for family practitioners, who will sympathize with many of the events; and for specialists of all sorts, who may or may not know all that the LMD (local medical doctor) has been through.Professional writers may find several problems with this book. There is some imbalance in the details presented: names mentioned that need not be, itineraries given for trips that may not interest the readers, a paucity of detail about some of the patients and their problems. And the book is organized around areas of Dr Brown's life, his medical practice in one section, his family life in another, his social commitments in another. We sometimes lose the sense of growth and development a more chronological approach would give. Together the various sections
