This case stimulated our interest, and for the first time, we carefully examined all of our patients with thyroid disease specifically to exclude the possibility of myasthenia gravis. Although we had two known cases of myasthenia gravis in the first 16 years of clinical thyroid practice, we have "discovered" 18 cases in the past two years that were previously missed by us or other physicians. The age range for this group was 28 to 54 years. Fourteen patients were women and four were men. The sex ratio was not different from that observed in our thyroid practice population.1 Thirteen patients had coexisting Graves' disease, and five had Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Interestingly, the occurrence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is probably more frequent in our thyroid practice than Graves' disease.
