    Dr Rau's comments may mislead the reader not familiar with EMG. The EMG changes described in our article can be explained only on the basis of nerve compression and not disuse as suggested. Membrane irritability (denervation) has never been described in the EMG literature as the result of disuse secondary to pain unless the pain itself was caused by nerve compression.Our research activities are continuing and will be presented before the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in November 1979. We are now able to demonstrate nerve compression using femoral nerve and "F" studies that were not utilized in our original study.It was impossible to examine a sufficient number of patients preoperatively because before this study, few orthopedic surgeons would even regard an EMG as indicated in a meniscectomy patient. We are planning to study a group of patients undergoing total knee replacement both preoperatively
