    In my opinion, letters of this type and quality are extremely important in the process of discovering the side effects of any new drug. Although timolol maleate had been extremely well studied before its release, it is only after such a drug has been on the market and has been used in thousands of patients that some of the less frequent side effects appear. Although case reports do not often prove cause and effect, they are important for pointing out circumstances in which more study is needed or where caution should be used.Suspected adverse effects such as are reported in Dr Shaivitz's letter should also be reported to the Food and Drug Administration (8800 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20205), the pharmaceutical company itself, and for adverse ocular side effects, National Registry of Drug Induced Ocular Side Effects (F.
