We have recently done a prospective study searching for factors predisposing to thrombosis in patients with SLE (unpublished data), and we have reported thrombotic accidents in five of 28 patients. Four of these patients had arterial thrombosis, and only one had thrombophlebitis. The patients were tested for platelet function and coagulation, and fibrinolytic studies, including factor VIII complex activities1 and fibrinolytic activity2 of blood after venous stasis, were also carried out. Two major abnormalities were found: (1) an increase activity of the factor VIII complex in the absence of steroid therapy (VIII: C, 1.63 units/mL; VIII R: Ag, 1.86 units/mL; VIII R: Wf, 2.11 units/mL, mean values) and (2) an absence of plasminogen activator activity.
