But recent advances in the pharmacotherapy of depression may make it easier to eradicate depression than poverty. Melancholia has been recognized as a major medical disorder since ancient times and it continues to be a large problem today. It is estimated that 100 million persons throughout the world suffer from depression, and probably close to 50% of patients who consult physicians have some primary or secondary depressive features. It may be that with such widespread prevalence, depression is both underdiagnosed and undertreated.Clinical Depressions: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges is a book that takes a fresh look at depression and highlights recent advances in the therapy of that condition. In many respects, the book is excellent, but as occurs with many multiauthored books, it has an uneven quality. Clinical Depressions is an account of the proceedings of a clinical symposium SN - 0098-7484 M3 - doi: 10.1001/jama.1981.03320020059034 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/jama.1981.03320020059034 ER -
