Of these 99 schools, 85 were fully accredited four-year schools granting the MD degree, six were accredited two-year schools of the basic medical sciences, and eight had students enrolled but had not yet advanced their educational programs sufficiently to qualify for accreditation.Medical school enrollments have continued to increase, both through expansion of existing schools and through development of new schools. The number of MD's graduated exceeded 8,000 for the first time in 1969 and the number of first-year students enrolled in the fall of 1969 was expected to exceed 10,000 for the first time. These figures, and the projected enrollments for the next five years which are given elsewhere, are evidence that the "tooling-up" process in American medical education is beginning to show results in terms of more medical students SN - 0098-7484 M3 - doi: 10.1001/jama.1969.03160340068017 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/jama.1969.03160340068017 ER -
