It took an hour, when the finger could have been freed painlessly in a couple of minutes by the same method I use to remove a ring from a swollen finger. I have used the method for some 40 years, can't remember where I learned it, and thought it was generally known. Apparently it isn't, and it should be.It is usually possible to pass a string through the ring. The string is then wound tightly around the swollen side, making a half-dozen turns next to the ring. It is then un-wound from the other side while exerting tension on the string. (Figure). This is continued until the ring is free.
