N2  - Is Rubella Vaccination Safe During Pregnancy 
    ?The safety of rubella vaccines for pregnant women is being studied in Finland and Japan, with the aid of women scheduled for therapeutic abortions.So far, in about 20 women vaccinated at various stages of pregnancy, attenuated virus crossed a placenta only once to reach the fetus.In natural rubella infection of pregnant women, the chance of fetal infection is about 50%. Further studies are needed to determine how frequently such "accidents" occur in vaccination, Frederick C. Robbins, MD, told the Third International Conference on Congenital Malformations held in The Hague."The outlook for effective prevention of congenital rubella is very good, but there are unanswered questions about the duration of immunity," said Dr. Robbins, Nobel Laureate and dean of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, Cleveland.Rubella's potential for damaging the fetus was the chief reason for developing vaccines against the disease, which
