This is a Magnificent atlas of congenital or hereditary defects usually associated with mental retardation, ranging from the fairly common Down's syndrome to conditions which the average practitioner may not encounter even once in a lifetime.Edited by Drs. Sidney Gellis and Murray Feingold, and supported financially by a division of HEW, the volume represents a commendable outlay of the taxpayers' money. The subject matter offers excellent opportunity for visual presentation. Would that other fields of medicine had equal potential in this regard!In the main the illustrations, many taken from the Picture of the Month section of the American Journal of Diseases of Children, are superb. Some of the figures might have stepped directly out of a Goya canvas.
