Licensure developed as the tool to assure public protection when the states first assumed responsibility for regulating health professions. Official licensure establishes and enforces minimal standards of education and training for entering and remaining in the practice of from 11 to 25 controlled health professions and occupations, depending on the state.The voluntary certification programs developed by the various professions and occupations also assure public protection by improving education and training programs, accrediting such programs and requiring compliance with professional and ethical standards.
