Naunyn, son of a well-to-do Berlin burgomaster, was recognized as one of the great clinical teachers and investigators of metabolic phenomena in the latter part of the 19th century.1 Sharing honors with Ehrlich as a brilliant pupil of Frerichs, Naunyn subsequently surpassed his professor in achievements attendant upon investigation in the biochemical and physiology laboratory of clinical mysteries that appeared at the bedside. In another context, Naunyn was a member of a notable cast of physicians who advanced German medicine from an 18th century discipline of natural philosophy into 19th century science, founded upon reproducible evidence gained in the experimental laboratory.Naunyn's early educational performance was not particularly brilliant.
