N2  - Alois Alzheimer, pathologist of the central nervous system, was born in Marktbreit, Bavaria, the son of a government officer.1 After attending school in Aschaffenburg and Würzburg,Alzheimer studied medicine at the universities of Würzburg,Tübingen, and Berlin. He received the MD degree from Würzburg in 1887, upon the presentation of a thesis on the wax-producing glands of the ear based upon work carried out in von Kölliker'slaboratory. Following his internship, he served seven years as assistant in the Irrenanstalt in Frankfurt-am-Main; there he was joined in 1889 by Nissl, who led him into systematic research in brain pathology and then served for seven years as director of the asylum. In 1895, Nissl was called to Heidelberg by Kraepelin, Alzheimer following in 1902. One year later Alzheimer and Kraepelin moved to Munich.
