The number of patients infected with relatively penicillin-resistant gonorrhea was not determined. There was a two-week period between the initial diagnosis and onset of treatment and the retesting for infection. In the patients receiving medication orally, as with tetracycline, there was no confirmation that the patients took the medication as prescribed. The patients who were "laboratory positive" after the two-week period were labeled "treatment failures." It would appear possible that most of these were actually cases of reinfection.
