Grace, MD.Four patients with ventricular fibrillations and two with complete heart block and pulmonary edema survived due to this unit at New York's St. Vincent Hospital. Some 130 other patients also have been successfully treated in the mobile unit which has been sent to homes, factories, and even into the subway. In a report to the American College of Physicians, it was pointed out that with present equipment physicians are doing about as much as they can for patients once they reach the hospital's coronary care unit. But about one-half of those with acute myocardial infarctions die before reaching the hospital."Even a slight reduction in the annual number of deaths (175,000) due to myocardial infarction could result in a substantial number of lives saved."
