The patient was the product of an uneventful pregnancy and delivery and had been well until three months prior to admission. At that time, she began to experience intermittent vague low-back pain which awakened her from sleep and was aggravated by motion. One day before admission the patient was seen by her family physician who referred her to this hospital.At the time of physical examination the patient was in the 80th percentile for height and weight, her blood pressure was 150/90 mm Hg, and a large nontender immovable firm mass was palpated in the right side of her abdomen. The liver edge was separate from the mass; the liver was not enlarged. A phentolamine (Regitine) mesylate test was negative.
