G. Enge (Rev Inst Med Trop S Paulo [July-Aug] 1962) observed three patients who had interstitial pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii. One of them also had cytomegaly of the salivary glands and the acute myocarditis of Chagas' disease. The authors stressed that one of the children acquired the disease from the other, who was his bed neighbor. Diagnosis through puncture of the lung was attempted in one case while the patient was still alive. The biopsy specimen was sufficient for diagnosis, but the child died of hemothorax due to accidental puncture of a great vessel near the hilus. It seems, however, that biopsy of the lung is still the only diagnostic procedure for this particular interstitial pneumonia. Clinical observations showed the insidious beginning of the disease—a poor symptomatology and marked radiological findings.
