    Training Grants Exceed One Million Dollars Annually.— 
    Value of research training grants and fellowships at the University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham, each year now exceeds one million dollars. Three years ago, this figure was $359,000. This 300% growth in value of research and training grants was revealed by Joseph F. Volker, Ph.D., director of research and graduate studies of the center, as part of the report of the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. As of Dec. 1, 1958, Dr. Volker said, there were 103 active research and training grants in the Medical Center. Of these, 88 are classified as research grants. They come from 14 different granting sources, chief of which is the U. S. Public Health Service. Fifteen training grants are designed to prepare "promising young physicians, dentists, and basic scientists" for careers as teacher-investigators in various health fields.
