Some of these sections were eventually combined or divided. The Section on Surgery, General and Abdominal was originally called Section on Surgery. It was given its present name in 1914. The Section on Internal Medicine was first the Section on Practical Medicine and Obstetrics. In 1873 it was split into ( 1 ) Section on Practical (Practice of Medicine) Materia Medica and Physiology (the terms Practical Medicine and Practice of Medicine were used interchangeably for many years ) and ( 2 ) Section on Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children. In 1946 it became the Section on Internal Medicine.
