TY - JOUR T1 - PRactical aspects of thyroid disease Y1 - 1949/08/06 N1 - 10.1001/jama.1949.02900490056031 JO - Journal of the American Medical Association SP - 1190 EP - 1190 VL - 140 IS - 14 N2 - According to the preface the author's conclusions are based on his experience in the surgical treatment of 1,000 patients with diseases of the thyroid plus observations of several hundred patients with hyperthyroidism treated with antithyroid drugs by one of his colleagues. Most thyroid diseases have moved from the domain of the surgeon to general practice. As a consequence both internists and surgeons will need to familiarize themselves with the recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the thyroid and to cooperate more closely than heretofore. The book has 27 chapters, 1 of which is devoted to the anatomy and 1 to the physiology of the thyroid. One is devoted to a discussion of the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. The author's opinion of the value of blood iodine determinations will be comforting to the many clinicians who do not have access to facilities for this test.
