N2  - The subject is of general interest to the specialist, general practitioner and medical student. The book is valuable because of an extensive review of the literature concerning not only the role of heredity in hypertension but also the incidence of hypertension in various age groups in the population. The author does not accept the conclusions of previous writers because of the small series of cases and inadequate controls. Unfortunately, although the book is short and contains numerous summaries, there is considerable ambiguity in the terminology used. This may in part be the result of the translation.The author defines essential hypertension as a systolic pressure of 160 mm. or more and a diastolic pressure of 100 mm. or more, although he includes persons under 50 years with a systolic pressure of 160 alone.
