He emphasizes the importance of the influence of the anterior pituitary lobe as an organ effective in the regulation of blood sugar and reviews the investigations of Houssay, Young and Best. The experiments of these authors are believed to confirm the conception that a hormone antagonistic to insulin is produced by the anterior pituitary lobe.In the section on clinical diabetes Bertram defines diabetes as a chronic disease of the total neuro-endocrine apparatus with a hypofunction of the pancreas in the foreground. A disturbance in the anterior pituitary lobe is etiologically responsible for some cases of diabetes, if not for all.
