Eighty-six patients formed a group before and 645 after insulin was begun and the latter comprised patients treated between October 1923 and July 1936 in the second medical clinic of the University of Helsinki. Whereas 19 per cent of the eighty-six patients treated before the employment of insulin died in the clinic, the mortality among 645 patients later treated in the clinic was only 6.8 per cent. Coma fell from 81 per cent in the former to 27 per cent in the latter. In fact, of the thirteen patients in actual coma and in precoma before the use of insulin all died and only 24 per cent of those after it was begun.
