The authors have examined, in the original with few exceptions, 10,500 journal articles and other published reports. While they do not claim that this is a complete index of all published articles in the field, reference to any important article not included may be obtained from the bibliographies of the the articles listed. The first volume is a chronological author index beginning with the year 1816. The second volume is a subject index, the names of authors appearing under each subject in alphabetical order.
