To learn about a subject there is the Oxford way—to read all the books that have been written on it—and the Cambridge way—to write your own book. Readers will be glad that Professor Harris chose the Cambridge way. The present small volume consists of an introduction to the vitamins from the historical point of view and a discussion of vitamin B1 and of beriberi as a vitamin deficiency disease. The features of the book are the commendable brevity with which the material is summarized, the large number of well chosen illustrations and the fairly complete bibliography.
