TY - JOUR T1 - WHitla's dictionary of treatment including medical and surgical therapeutics Y1 - 1939/06/03 N1 - 10.1001/jama.1939.02800220123041 JO - Journal of the American Medical Association SP - 2357 EP - 2357 VL - 112 IS - 22 N2 - Sir William Whitla, a prominent physician of Belfast, Ireland, wrote this book and edited it through seven editions. He died in 1933 and so many advances have been made since that it was necessary for new editors to rewrite it. Sir William's original plan of dealing with each subject from the general practitioner's point of view has been followed. In addition to the editors there are ten special contributors, all members of the Belfast school. As the title indicates, they follow the dictionary plan, but there is an index in the back. The book is probably as nearly abreast of the times as a book of its scope could be. However, under pellagra there is no mention of the use of nicotinic acid, although there is brief mention of the treatment by means of yeast and vitamin B.
