Since the printing of the first edition, in 1939, two of the original three authors, Kayne and O'Shaughnessy, have died. As the new authors point out, nine years is an unusually long interval in a period so fruitful in the development of knowledge of tuberculosis and so critical in the problems raised by tuberculosis in a world much of which has been devastated by war and famine. Originally the work was intended to combine in one volume a presentation of the pathologic, clinical and surgical aspects of pulmonary tuberculosis based largely on the individual conceptions of the authors, with the addition of essential references to general literature on the subject.
