The subject is discussed frankly, and the limitations as well as the advantages of this method of examination are enumerated. The procedure is compared with other methods, including roentgenology, with the idea of giving an honest evaluation of gastroscopy. It is stated that this method is useful in about two thirds of instances, the remainder consisting of lesions in inaccessible regions, as at the pyloric region, particularly near the lesser curvature. The author thinks that the instrument will be greatly improved when it will be possible to remove small pieces for histologic examination. Chronic gastritis seems to be a particularly difficult condition to recognize.
