Previous editions have been used for years as textbooks for students. The volume is brought down to date and the old illustrations have almost entirely been replaced by new ones. The illustrations are of uniformly high character and add materially to the excellence of the book. There is almost no discussion of pathology, the author stating in the preface that this subject as well as other fundamental sciences in surgery are accessible elsewhere and that their omission thus permits him to confine the work to the limits of one volume. Naturally the point of view throughout the book, as anticipated, has a marked personal tinge; but this is not unwelcome. The treatment of the various pathologic entities is conservative and thoroughly rational. The work can be recommended without hesitation to the practitioner especially.
