TY - JOUR T1 - THe use of the stethoscope in the prevention of "boiler-makers' laryngitis" AU - Krasno LR, De Motte RJ, Ivy AC Y1 - 1943/12/11 N1 - 10.1001/jama.1943.82840500003007a JO - Journal of the American Medical Association SP - 958 EP - 958 VL - 123 IS - 15 N2 - In many industries the existence of noise renders it necessary to shout and strain the voice in order to be heard. This condition gives rise to many cases of laryngitis which can be prevented by the use of a simple communication system. The stethoscope is an ideal instrument for this purpose. It does not involve intricate electrical appliances and can be carried about free from line wires. The speaker talks through the bell of the stethoscope. This is best accomplished by cupping the hand about the bell and making contact between the mouth and the hand. The receiver listens through the ear pieces. A very clear communication is thus effected with the use of the voice at conversational levels amidst loud noises.303 East Chicago Avenue.
