N2  - In practically all but one branch of medicine, when the war broke out, there was a fairly well defined system which governed and held together the work of each department, and served as a basis whereby it could be lifted up, whole, as it were, and transferred into the army service as a useful and workable unit.General surgery, for one, was well organized and prepared at once to begin creditable war work. The pathologic laboratory was laid out along such precise and practical lines that it was carried over with ease.
