To the Editor: In their review of nonprogressive disease in HIV, Drs Migueles and Connors1 described co-infection with hepatitis B and hepatitis C (HCV). The authors noted a rate of HCV clearance of 21.4% in their patients and stated that this is similar to non–HIV-infected individuals. However, they did not indicate whether they controlled for sex or race when they compared this rate with historical controls. Both of these factors can affect HCV clearance rates.2- 3 The authors concluded that “these findings suggest nonimmunodeficient LTNPs are no more likely to control hepatitis B virus or HCV replication than other nonimmunosuppressed individuals.”
