TY - JOUR T1 - EMerging monkeypox AU - Stephenson J Y1 - 2010/10/20 N1 - 10.1001/jama.2010.1451 JO - JAMA SP - 1659 EP - 1659 VL - 304 IS - 15 N2 - Through active population-based surveillance in 9 health zones in the central DRC, where smallpox vaccination ceased in 1980, the researchers identified at least 760 confirmed cases of monkeypox between November 2005 and November 2007; infection was 5.2 less likely among those who had been vaccinated against smallpox vs those who had not (0.78 per 10 000 vs 4.05 per 10 000). These data, compared with surveillance data in the 1980s, suggest that monkeypox incidence has increased 20-fold (from 0.72 cases per 10 000 to 14.42 per 10 000) after smallpox vaccination campaigns ended.
