They suggest that questionnaires may overestimate the hypothetical true rate of depression whereas structured interviews, often touted as the gold standard in psychiatric epidemiology, produce lower estimates. Although we agree that questionnaires are characterized by relatively lower specificity,1 many respondents, and especially men, may underreport symptoms, resulting in false negatives on household structured interview surveys like many of the examples cited by Thombs et al.
