In Reply: As Dr Finucane points out, the issue of older drivers with cognitive impairment is complex, and decisions that could lead to such drivers losing their license should not be taken lightly. Driving is considered by many adults to be essential to independence. It provides an opportunity for them to stay engaged in their community and to participate in activities that enhance their quality of life. Research suggests that driving cessation is associated with increased depression over time and decline in general psychological well-being.1
