The examination of acute physiological changes and chronic adaptations of body structure and function as they relate to exercise, physical activity, and sport form the main basis of the survey of the state of the science presented in Paediatric Exercise Science and Medicine. Physical activity refers to any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in an expenditure of energy, whereas exercise refers to a subset of physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive. Whereas exercise and physical activity are integral components of playing sport, sport is played within a social context.
