In Reply: Dr Hubbeling may have misconstrued our position. Although we strongly endorse the organization of deep brain stimulation clinical studies in registries, we fully appreciate that such registries can only be organized once initial studies occur. However, once a putative discovery is conveyed through the publication of a single case study, we believe that responsible investigators should initiate a fuller clinical trial and register their findings in a way that allows for generalizable analysis. Single case reports are legitimate vehicles for the reporting of important discoveries, but serial publication of such reports is antithetical to the scientific method.
