In a recent prospective study examining the incidence of gallstone disease in a general population,2 among 118 persons having gallstone disease at the start of the study, only 14 underwent cholecystectomy during a 5-year follow-up and none of the 42 participants without stones at baseline but with stones at rescreening 5 years later experienced complications requiring cholecystectomy. In the study by Bodmer et al,1 gallstones may have developed before follow-up in many of patients, irrespective of statin use.
