The demographic shift toward persons of color being a rapidly growing proportion of the US population is the editors' thesis for this compilation. Sana Loue and Martha Sajatovic have gathered a collection of chapters addressing mental health and illness in diverse groups of persons of color and highlight mental wellness. Health (a state of being) and wellness (the process of pursuing that state) are clearly defined, with individual and systemic barriers to wellness emphasized. Readers learn that “mental illness is defined as subjective distress by a patient or impairment in functioning,” while the prevalence of mental disorders are similar for all cultural, racial, and ethnic groups in the United States. However, persons of color and immigrants have a greater chance of being socially disadvantaged and less likely to receive medical care.
