The grant is part of a $17 million initiative by DHHS to combat hospital-associated infections. A randomized trial of the checklists demonstrated they could substantially reduce infection rates in Michigan hospitals (Pronovost P et al. N Engl J Med 2006;355[26]:2725-2732). The new funding from the AHRQ will allow implementation of the program in additional intensive care units across the country as well as in other hospital departments. The remaining $9 million in grants will fund other initiatives to reduce such infections. A complete list of the programs is available online (http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/haify09.htm).
