As a young resident in the late 1970s with a special interest in the elderly, I read a much earlier edition of this text. At that time, the only other “big books” in geriatrics were from the United Kingdom and, while authoritative, some of the material was not always appropriate to care in North America. I recall enjoying Reichel's earlier text, primarily because of its relative brevity and above all its practical approach. More than 30 years have passed, and a number of texts are now published, in both the United States and the United Kingdom, that deal primarily with geriatric care. How has Reichel's text fared in its latest version?
