The second edition of General Surgery Review has been released under the direct supervision of Martin Makary, an internationally recognized surgeon at Johns Hopkins. The more than 500 pages of this softcover book provide a targeted review on a wide spectrum of surgical specialties and topics. Specifically, there are 46 chapters divided into 5 sections: “Surgical Subspecialties,” “General and Gastrointestinal Surgery,” “Anesthesia/Trauma/Critical Care,” “Basic Science,” and “Outcomes/Ethical Issues.” The chapters are generally 10 to 20 pages long and, as described by the section headings, focus on surgical subspecialties (eg, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, transplantation), anesthesia/critical care/trauma (eg, perfusion and shock, burn management), basic science (eg, nutrition, wound healing, cell biology, immunology), outcome topics (eg, statistics, patient safety, ethics), and general/gastrointestinal (GI) surgery (eg, esophagus, appendix, abdominal hernia). The largest of the 5 sections is that covering general/GI surgery, which includes 19 chapters addressing the broad scope of this field.
