Institutional leaders bemoan the difficulty of recruiting and retaining faculty to academic medicine, and residents frequently report that they see little in the work lives of their faculty mentors that attracts them to careers in academic medicine. Because of the pervasiveness of these views, it is critical that academic medical centers examine and address the causes of these phenomena.
